Will veneers fix my crooked teeth?

I originally was planning on saving up a bunch of money, and just getting implants for pretty much every single one of my teeth. Now I know, that would be hella expensive, and also time consuming. I was told that veneers would be a better choice. I was concerned, because I thought implants would circumvent the idea that I had to get braces before I got my teeth fixed, meaning, I've been told that I do not need braces before I get veneers put in. I don't understand how this is possible, can anyone explain? My teeth are not TERRIBLY crooked, but more so than I want them to be (2 teeth are noticbly out of line %26amp; I am missing one tooth on my left side - it was removed to make room for my other teeth after I got braces) Basically, I had too many teeth, and not enough room for all of them.

So what I want to know is - can I go to a dentist, and for a reasonable amount of money, have them create me some perfectly inline, straigh, white, top and bottom teeth, that can be put in in one day?

Will veneers fix my crooked teeth?
heres and article i found that might help you out a bit

Traditional Porcelain Veneers typically cost between $900 - $2,500. per tooth and require two or more visits one to two weeks apart. Veneers made of porcelain provide a greater longevity than plastic, typically ten years to fifteen years or more.

Composite Veneers cost significantly less, around $250 per tooth or more, but only last from five to seven years typically.

Lumineer Porcelain Veneers typically cost between $700. - $1,000. per tooth and also require just two visits. Lumineers are expected to last as long as traditional porcelain veneers.

Generally speaking, the price of tooth veneers and whitening increases with the number of in-office treatments required by the patient. Dental insurance does not typically cover the cost of the tooth veneers procedure. Cost will vary depending on your region, the skill level of your Cosmetic Dentist and the quality of the lab they use.
Reply:You can go to a dentist but it would not be done in one day and it would not be for a reasonable amount of money.

Also, veneers will not correct crooked teeth. They just make your teeth all look the same color.

In order to get your teeth straightened, you will either need to see a dentist or orthodontist about straigtening your teeth.

Good Luck.
Reply:Veneers are 800 to 1000 each. Understand this before you get started. And they can make your teeth look straighter because they shape the tooth under the veneer as much as they need to before they put on the veneer. If you have, say a space, they can make the veneer a little larger on each side to close the gap. The problem with that is that it can leave you looking like you have big Chiclet teeth. Also, they can only do so much because you can only shape a tooth to a certain extent, so you may not have perfect teeth after you have spent all that money. Also they have to be replaced every few years, so it would be a continuing expense.

And i dont know who told you that implants would be an idea, but you would have had to have ALL of the teeth you wanted replaced pulled. No honest dentist would do that if your teeth are healthy. That would be like cutting off your arm and getting a prosthetic one because you didn't like your fingernails!!

You would spend a lot less getting braces to fix your teeth. If you get veneers and your bite is not correct, you can break them and you would have to pay all over again. If you get the braces, not only will your teeth look straighter, but they would be more functionally correct.

Whitening teeth with veneers?

My dentist says i cannot whiten my teeth professionaly because i have two veneers at the front of my mouth which because they are porceline will not whiten like my real teeth. It could end up looking weird. The only way possible is to have my veneers replaced with new ones so they can match the rest of my teeth but this is very pricey and he says because the veneers have been put in so well it would be a shame/risk to take them out to be replaced. But im thinking i may just get it done anyway and hope for the best. Anyone ever had this prob? How did u get out of it?

Whitening teeth with veneers?
What your dentist said is correct. Porcelain veneers will not get whiter with teeth whitening, same goes for crowns and fillings, you can try whitening your teeth, but if the color discrepancy is major after you finish bleaching, then you have to remake these 2 veneers.

I don't think removing veneers is a hard task, specially if the dentist has laser in his office, they can be removed in about 5mins.

Do veneers feel different from regular teeth?

I watch a lot of 10yrs younger and a lot of people get veneers and I was wondering if you could treat them like real teeth. Can they break or fall out or do you get them cleaned and treated like regular teeth? My dad has been really sensitive about his teeth and I think, if veneers are safe and reliable, I could do him this favour to have more confidence in his smile as he is sacrificing a lot by putting me through graduate school.

Thanks!

Do veneers feel different from regular teeth?
Aww that's a really sweet thought.

Yes they feel and are treated like regular teeth. Be aware however that like all dental treatments they have a limited life time before they fail and have to be replaced. This time period varies depending on the type of vaneer so be sure to ask your dentist when you see them.

A lot of information about vaneers in simple english can be found here: http://www.doctorspiller.com/Dental_Bond...

Reply:yes
Reply:No they do not feel different.
Reply:A lot of people prefer veneers to correct a smile as opposed to dentures or braces. My mom has veneers for her two front teeth and she hasn't had a problem with them. I think she got them over 15 years ago.

There is a potential for them to get damaged, but I don't think anymore than a real tooth. My mom goes to the dentist every 6 months for her regular cleaning...nothing else extra or special.
Reply:no they feel like your own teeth.i've had mine now for 16 months and there awesome.very expensive but i love them.i have't had any problems what so ever.my dentist was accually really upset about my wanting to get them my teeth were in excellent shape i had braces as a kid,no cavities, but i wanted them anyways.i didn't like how small my teeth looked and wasn't happy with the color,so yeah i give them two thumbs up!and your very sweet for caring for your father.

Tooth veneers, porcelain etc? weird question?

What does it look like behind the tooth/veneer?

Are they just like squarish shaped plates that go on the front?

Can the pieces of teeth that are left rot, or move, making your veneers change position?

Do they have to sand off a lot of your tooth or are there any that just fit over?

Also what about these things called "caps" Where do you get those. You know like what Robin Williams snaps on in Mrs Doubtfire, then they fall off into the glass lol. What are they and do they actually exist as an option?

-Sorry for all the questions. Please answer as many as possible.

I love picking best answers! but usually don't get any good ones. Someone must know? ;-)

Tooth veneers, porcelain etc? weird question?
Toothfairy gave a very good answer and you should vote it as best.

Just to add: the amount of tooth removed to place veneers depends on a few factors - how much re-shaping needs to be done, if there is any decay or existing fillings in the teeth, if there are open contacts or crowding.

Most dentists will be happy to discuss options for cosmetic restorations. Ask to see pictures of their actual cases (not just cases in a book they bought).

Keep in mind that "Cosmetic Dentistry" is not an actual specialty recognized by the ADA. Anybody can call themselves a cosmetic dentist, so ask around.
Reply:A veneer is basically a false front on your tooth. It reaches from your gumline to just behind the bottom edge of your toothand wraps around both sides a little. Some of the original tooth surface usually has to be removed but not very much. You can get a cavity in any natural tooth and the veneer does not stop that since most of the backside of the natural tooth is still exposed.

A "cap" is a common name for a crown, which is similar to a veneer, but more tooth is removed and it covers the whole tooth surface rather than just the front.

Hope that helps!
Reply:A veneer is kinda like a fake fingernail but the difference is that the tooth has to be prepped down to make space for the veneer so they are not too thick. The tooth structure that is left is basically the back of your tooth and if you take care of your teeth and see a dentist regularly you shouldn't have any problems.

The kind of caps you are talking about are just a prosthesis that fit over your teeth, they make those especially for actors and such...in a sense kinda like billy bob teeth that you can put in and wear.

Hope that helps..... :)
Reply:The porcelain veneers are very thin layer of porcelain, that seat right on top of your own teeth. They are for cosmetic reasons.By getting them you can change your teeth color, you can close small gaps and you can straiten your teeth to some level. They are permanent and they get glued on to your teeth. In order to make them fit and to have some room for them they have to sand off some of your own.Not much. After that an impression is being taken from your moth and they send it to the dental lab with bunch of instructions. The lab makes them according to your mouth and impressions,so they'll fit perfect. The last step is gluing them on.The caps are complete covers to protect a broken dawn teeth or root canaled teeth. The veneers are just for the face of your teeth. The back stays the same. The caps have metal lining inside them, for strong support.Again dental lab makes them. What Robin Williams is using are dentures. In his case the fake once. You don't want to get those. Not in these days.If you want to know about dentures, ask again,I'll do my best to explain.

Dental Question Implant, Veneers Both at Same Time??

My husband just lost 1 tooth his canine top left. We want to get it replaced however we've been thinking of having his teeth veneered since they are discolored. What would be suggestions for this? Have the tooth implanted, then later have veneers on all or have the implant the color you want and then have all the veneers to match that one? Anyone sure on how this works or any ideas about it? I know its going to be expensive. Do you go to a cosmetic dentist for this or what type of dentist would you go for all this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dental Question Implant, Veneers Both at Same Time??
Why did he lose his tooth? If it was due to periodontal disease, he may not be a candidate for an implant (not enough bone to support it) although bone grafting is sometimes and option. He can get the crown of the implant to be colour matched to the veneers. I would try whitening the teeth first......'depends on what the discolouration is due to. If it's from medications eg: tetracycline stain, whitening won't really do much.

Any dentist can do this, not just cosmetic ones.

However, he may have to go to an oral surgeon or periodontist to have the "screw" of the implant put in, then the dentist will put the porcelain crown on top once it has healed.
Reply:Where do I begin...

The first thing to do is to see a General Dentist for a complete examination. He must get his oral health in good shape before cosmetic work. Many family dentists do cosmetic veeneers. If you want, he can make a temporary device to fill the space. He can refer you to an Oral Surgeon for a Dental Implant. What you are decribing will be done in phases.

Dental Implants are expensive. Your General Dentist will have muliple options for dental treatment, depending on your needs, taste (what you like), and what you can afford. Call the Dental Association in your city or state for referrals, if don't know someone that could give you the name of a good dentist. Or...you walk up to a stranger and say, " You have a beautiful smile (or nice teeth). Who's your dentist?" :)

Tooth veneers, porcelain etc?
I have veneers on my top and bottom teeth, they ground down alot of the tooth, pretty scary but now I have beautiful teeth and no one can tell that they are veneers. They just cover the front of your teeth you still have your own tooth on the back.

Having Veneers?

I have horrible teeth in my opinion they are all there except one (i had it out yesterday, hurts like mad!) which is fine because it wont cause me pain in the future and when i smile you cant tell there is no tooth because its from the very back.

my teeth are white but not in-your-face gleaming colour white, at the front from when i was little my teeth arnt straight, i think getting braces wont help because im 15 and think they have stopped growing, so i want some veneers theres about four teeth on the tope row that arnt straight and about five on the bottom how much would this cost??

i know probs allot right? just asking though.

thanks

oo also have you got veneers did they hurt?

Having Veneers?
Your jaws will continue to grow. You're only 15 and braces are not a lost cause. Veneers on the other hand are expensive %26amp; irreversable. Plus when one chips, shatters, or falls off, it can take 4-6 weeks to get the replacement made %26amp; reattached. Once they've shaved your teeth down, that's it. Your stuck with veneers for the rest of your life.

I was 15 when I got braces, and they worked wonders for me. So unless there is some fluke and you've stopped grown 6 years too soon, veneers are not the way to go.
Reply:veneers are at least £500 per tooth and that would be cheap probably £600 or £700 per tooth somewhere good. They need to be replaced eventually too. I dont think they hurt anymore than having a filling.

If your teeth need straightening slightly look up 'invisalign' braces.
Reply:ah babe, don't do it.. I have veneers (I had a condition where there was very little enamel left) it costs a fortune and it is bloody awful to go through, if your teeth are 'white' leave them be,(or get a bleaching if u want more confidence) as for straightening them, ...ha i had lovely straight teeth (the best thing about my teeth!!!) but the veneers change the shape of your mouth.. you will probably find (unless you have a real good dentist!!) that they will be more sticky out!!!! (mind i think i had a crap dentist!!!) talk to your dentist about braces, i am sure they will be able to help you,

honestly leave it for a few years and if you go for it make sure you have a real good dentist, they shave your teeth away so you are left with sticks.. bear in mind if the veneers fall off you will have to have sticks for teeth for days..(I have had it happen to me.. I didn't open my mouth for about a week!!.. my family loved it!!) ;-)

not trying to scare you, but think it through properly, and REMEMBER pick a GREAT dentist.. xxx
Reply:no veneers ive my own teeth, at 53, have not been to dentist since i was 35, they do not ache, bleed, i clean them four times a day floss on a night, hate dentists,

nhs denists i think its free till your 16, why not join a dental school get them done, these are dental students who do practical work and take exams to become future dentists your teeth would be of great interest to them.
Reply:You sound like my situation except I'm older. I think because you're 15, Veneers are out of the question. No regular orthodontist/dentist would put Veneers on healthy yet crooked teeth. They want to use your own teeth.

Plus, Veneers are about $1000/tooth. So, if you got 4 on top to fix and then five on bottom, there's $9000. When you can get them straightened and then whitened by a dentist.

I chose the Invisalign route. I just want my upper front 6 teeth to line up better. And my lower front teeth to be straight too. Sounds like what you want. I could care less how my molars line up. I'm doing that for $3000. And it'll only take 7 months. Better than $9000.

Ask if you're a candidate for Invisalign. Invisalign is good for crowding of teeth. If you've got big gaps, braces will probably be better. And why not braces? You're still real young.
Reply:Your not too old to have braces. Veneers are very invasive and can cause a life time of trips to the dentist if you dont look after them properly. I would leave getting veneers done and look into braces instead

Teeth veneers?

I live around london area, how much is it for 2 veneers?

I hate by 2 front teeth they stick out more than the other teeth so could i get just 2 veneers?

Teeth veneers?
Is that your dog? Uhhdorable!!!

Okay i like in USA. So i looked up to see if you had a dentist finder and here is a site that has them

Yes many people i kno have had to get veneers my brother had to get one after he broke his tooth at work so im sure you can.

Veneers, Has anyone else experienced new veneers breaking?

I think my bite is off. I have had numberous veneers pop off or break in half and I have only had them 6 months.

Veneers, Has anyone else experienced new veneers breaking?
YES IF YOU BITE ABNORMALLY, THEN THE STESS DISTRIBUTION ON THE VENEER IS ABNORMALLY HIGH IN SOME AREAS AND IT WILL CRACK..YOU MAY NEED TO FIRST ALIGN TEH TEETH THEN DO THE VENEER.

Veneers; pain 6 months later normal?

I had veneers placed on my front teeth, but still having painful sensativety to hot /cold 6 months later; just opening my mouth in cold air weather is painful.

Is this normal, are veneers suppose to hurt this much months after the surgery? I ask my dentist and she told me to take alot of advil and it would get better, but I got a stomuch ache instead of relief...HELP! What are my options at this point?

Veneers; pain 6 months later normal?
I had veneers put on, and they NEVER hurt, nor were they sensitive to hot or cold. I've got a great dentist.

Try some Sensodyne toothpaste. It should really help.

Veneers question?????

What is the procedure for getting veneers?????

went to the dentist last week. The dentist made impressions of my mouth and teeth for whitening i think. I really need to get veneers before aug 25th 2007 for my wedding. My next appt is mon Aug 13th Do you think i would have it in time? My original appt was supposed to be tomorrow but my trays aren't in and they won't be in until mon......Any Additional information would be great!

Veneers question?????
it just depends on your dentist's turn around time. and if they send things off to a dental lab. call the office and just ask them these questions. they should be more than happy to answer them for you.

Veneers after braces?

i am getting my braces off in a week and at the beginning of my treatment, my orthodontist told me i was getting veneers because half of my right front tooth is chipped and when i got it fixed it was discolored and just didn't look right. so how long will it be after i get my braces off that i will get veneers?

Veneers after braces?
Well first off your orthodontist can not do the veneers for you because he is a specialist in braces. so, he will have to refer you to either a general dentist or a specialist that does crown and bridge. I could take a little while before you get them. I would talk to your orthodontist and see what his plan is then go from there. Good luck
Reply:nobody can tell when you get them except ur dentist, ask him

Veneers (15 years down the line)?

hi all, i'm concidering getting veneers but i know the average lifespan on them before they need replacing is 15 years.

now 2006 prices for veneers is pretty high, what will the prices be when the time comes they need replacing? the same or considerably lower?

99% things you buy in the world prices always come 'down', i hope thats the case for dentistry materials.

Veneers (15 years down the line)?
I seriously doubt that the price will come down, even in relative terms. Veneers are 100% hand-crafted. The dentist does his/her thing in your mouth and then a dental lab technician takes it from there. I do not envision any mass-production for veneers, which is what brings the price of other items down.
Reply:Trust a 32 year dental tech. They will only go higher. Dentists will not lower their prices and dental labs are already cutting the prices close to the bone. Although the life expectancy of veneers is 15 yrs., if you have veneers that do not fit well, they will fall out sooner or break. Make sure that you have a dentist that has a lot of these under his belt and that the work is being done here in the US. Also stipulate that a "Pressable" ceramic is to be used. They are tougher than the old build up technique. And they look better. If you call a dental lab in your area they can guide you to a good dentist. And also guide you away from a bad dentist.
Reply:I agree with Dr. Sam! Veneers, along with most dental/medical procedures usually do not come down in price. Buying veneers is not like buying a plasma screen TV. Unfortunately, dentists have to periodically raise their fees to compensate for inflation and increases in costs of the materials that we use. Unfortunately when you deal with hand crafted restorations like crowns and veneers, they are costly especially if they are done well! My advice to you is not to worry too much about what the costs may be in the future! If you decide to get them, make sure that you do your best to maintain them (ie. regular dental visits, wearing a mouth guard at night to protect them) to ensure that you get the longest life out of them!
Reply:prices for dental treatments, materails will not go down, the problem lies with insurance companies and they are not getting with the times. You may also want to look into Lumineers, the are as thin as a contact lens and can be place over existing dental work such as crown and bridges. there is no need to remove any tooth material, preppong the tooth is easier

VeNEERS STRENGHT!!?

I am 17 n..I Have My Temps Right Now N I Was Wondering..With The Real Veneers Can I eat What Ever I Want??N Do Whatever I Want Like I Used To With My Old Four Front Teeth??Are The Veneers Almost Like Real Teeth In Strenght?Because I Do Alot Of Martial Arts n i am afraid with the slightest punch it could knck em off..:( I Hope There Unbreakable...

Thanx Guys..

VeNEERS STRENGHT!!?
You do know that they don't last forever? And that the dentist may have to grind and sand your real teeth to nubs to make them fit? Meaning, that every 10 - 15 years or so, you can expect to fork over thousands of bucks to get them fixed and you'll never have your real teeth to fall back on.
Reply:I understand that they aren't terribly strong. You can do normal things like eat with them, but you can't use them to pry the tops off of cans, etc.
Reply:You can do everything you did before within reason...you have to remember that a porcelain veneer is just glued to the outside of your tooth and they can break if abused or kicked in the mouth just like a real tooth. You will not want to untie knots, bite into real sticky or hard things. Just remember they are jewels not tools and that should cover it.
Reply:Vote for JLouise8. I like that. "They are jewels, not tools." I'm gonna use that line myself, if I can remember it. She's 100% correct, though.

Veneers? or crowns.?

my question is i need to get 2 veneers but not sure how much they cost. but i need them on my fronts i was gonna get crowns but im not sure if crowns would look bad on your fronts. anyone know how much veneers are and and one have crowns on fronts.

Veneers? or crowns.?
There are different types of crowns. In fact you can have crowns that are made of the exact same material as veneers and thus are equally as nice. At the same time there's many different types of veneers, each has advantages and disadvantages. I would go with the dentists advice, crowns reinforce the teeth, but also require more removal of tooth structure.
Reply:Veneers are very expensive and you would have to see from the dentist how much they actually cost. I have crowns on my two front teeth and they look good and less expensive then veneers. Go to see your dentist on the best solution for you.
Reply:I have crowns on my front teeth. They do not look bad at all, and are less expensive than veneers. Ask your dentist which would work best and last longer.

Veneers versus caps?

Why would someone use caps than veneers - I have heard veneers are better for front teeth - What cost is expected per tooth.

Veneers versus caps?
I'm a dentist.

Veneers and caps (i.e. crowns) serve different but overlapping purposes. What you can accomplish with a veneer, you can accomplish with a cap. But not vice-versa.

Veneers are merely a facade, much like putting a new facing on your kitchen cabinets.

Crowns, on the other hand, protect the tooth from fracture. This is particularly important for teeth with very large composite restorations or endodontically treated (i.e. root canal'ed) teeth. Also, crowns are able to take biting forces. Veneers are not.

For pure cosmetics (with no need for strength enhancement), I'd go with a veneer. Less of the tooth is drilled away, and the margins (when done right) are in more cleansible areas.

Cosmetically, an all-porcelain crown can look every bit as nice as a veneer.
Reply:If a person has very large composite fillings in there front teeth, or they are a severe tooth grinder, then crowns (caps) would be better for them. We charge $925.00 a tooth for a veneer in my office.
Reply:Crowns (caps) are for teeth that are damaged beyond filling repair. If you have a root canal, you have to have a crown to protect the tooth and stablize it. A crown covers the whole tooth, like a "cap."

Veneers are mostly for cosmetic reasons. They are just a sheer piece that covers only the front of the tooth. Most people get them to improve tooth shape and color.

Cast vary depending on the dentist. Crowns are anywhere from $300 - $1000 each. Veneers $50 - $500.
Reply:IF AT ALL POSSIBLE VENEER'S ARE THE BETTER WAY TO GO. DOING CAPS.. THE DENTIST HAS TO GRIND YOUR TOOTH DOWN TO A PEG. THERE IS NO RETURN. VENEERS ARE GOOD WAY TO GO IF ITS FOR COSMETIC APPEARANCES... YOU WILL STILL HAVE YOUR TEETH NOT GROUND DOWN PEGS THAT HAVE TO CONTINUE TO BE CAPPED. COST VARY FROM ONE DENTIST OFFICE TO ANOTHER.
Reply:A good thing to have done is a consultation. My Dr. takes impressions and does a wax up of what he thinks is best for your situation. Making sure that the bite and cosmetics are the best they can be. If you clinch and or grind you will need a night guard made so that you do not pop off veneers.
Reply:veners cost anywhere from $900.00 to $1200 per tooth. The bad things with veneers is that they are very fragile. They are made out if porcelin and are paper thin. They can crack easily and they also have a tendancy of falling off. ALso with venners you still have to grid down the teeth so they can be placed. So once you do this something constently has to be on the tooth. Crown are more sturdy and stable, since they are PFM ( porcelin fussed to metal). They rarely break like venners would, and they tend to stay on. Take it some crown do come off, but usully its after 15 years or better. The cost of a crown is about $350.00-$600.00 depending on who you go to.

Veneers adn braces - is this possible?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to have veneers on the top row of your teeth and also have braces on the bottom row to fix a cross bite at the same time? Has this ever been done before? or would it be better to get braces on both rows/ veneers on both rows?

Veneers adn braces - is this possible?
Worry about your crossbite. An orthodontist will have to band both arches to correct this anyway. After you've got your occlusion fixed, veneers can be considered.

If you already have the veneers, the orthodontist can secure the brackets to the porcelain. I've seen this done once, but when the brackets were removed there were some scratches on the porcelain.
Reply:I highly recommend you to get braces both rows. This is because you want to keep all your natural teeth. With braces and natural teeth, this produces the greatest result than any dentist work.

Veneers sometimes may look nicer than problematic teeth (without corrected by braces). But they couldn't beat natural teeth which have been corrected by braces.

Never ever consider wearing veneers top row and braces bottom. Because their shades couldn't perfectly match. And veneers and natural teeth's texture are different. This will make your teeth look weird or unnatural because the top row and the bottom row are different. People can see you have done something to your teeth unnaturally.

Veneers are not reversible.

Wearing braces on your natural teeth are the best bet and produce the most beautiful result!!!
Reply:FYI...veneers are reversible if you get veneers done by a Dr that does Lumineers.
Reply:Braces are better they will correct everything naturally . you may still need veneers later just not as many. But if you do veneers with no braces you may more and depending on your bite you may keep replacing them because you will break them more often.

Whitening Teeth/Veneers?

So i have a bridge of four veneers in my mouth. I'm not totally satisfied with the color of my veneers or other teeth, but many of the at home whitening kits say that they won't work on anything except "natural" teeth. Is visiting my dentist the only way to see results, or does someone know of something that works to whiten veneers? Thanks.

Whitening Teeth/Veneers?
Veneers or crowns are mostly made with porcelein which is ceremic ( glass) and no whitening will work on porcelein. even if u go to dentist nothing will happen. The only way to improve the shade of porcelein to replace it. I mean new venners or crowns.

If your veneers are made with composit ( plastic) then u can go to dentist and they will polish them.
Reply:Crest White Strips work :)

Getting porcelain veneers to replace plastic ones.?

have had plastic veneers for ages and am frustrated with how fake they look. I know veneers that are porcelain look more natural but the reason I got the plastic ones in the first place was to cover eroded front teeth and the dentist tells me he will have to take off more enamel to put the porcelain veneers on. That's what I don't want, more enamel off. I fear if any more enamel comes off I wont have any of my real tooth left. What to do

Getting porcelain veneers to replace plastic ones.?
Porcelain Veneers are definitely far better in terms of life and esthetics as compared to plastic veneers. Very good decision to have opted for same. But if you want them to be cemented directly on to your teeth, your cosmetic dentist may oblige only if you do not complain of looking close to uglier or bulging (obese) teeth. The shaving off (0.8 mm) of tooth enamel is almost a necessary component to achieve perfect esthetics. The strength of the porcelain material will more or less compensate for the lost enamel. The sensitivity can be expected for 2-4 days or little more. Meds provided or prescribed by dentist will help ease the pain.
Reply:Dentalcare32 is 100% correct. If you do not get down to a fresh surface, the bond will not reeally bond and you will have your veneers popping of. It only has to be a fresh surface, which is similar to sanding through the varnish on a table before you apply new varnish. He won't grind off all of your enamel.
Reply:Why do you need veneers at all? If it is because you teeth are dark take off the "plastic" filling material and whiten them

Will My Veneers feel more normal than these temporaries?

I need your advice! I just had 6 temporary veneers put on my teeth and I hate the way these things feel--sensitive, like they're going to fall off any second, bulky, and I can't floss!! Please tell me, honestly, do permanent veneers feel better? Will the permanent veneers feel more natural and normal?

Will My Veneers feel more normal than these temporaries?
Yes they will feel much better than the tempory ones hang in there. The permanent ones do feel more natural but maybe slightly wider than your orginal teeth. i have had my veneers on for 12 years now with no trouble at all.
Reply:yes the veneers will feel a lot better
Reply:Yes and I bet you feel like a dinner plate has been inserted in your mouth. It will bother you for a few days or so then it will feel normal.
Reply:Most definitely, the veneers will feel better, although it will take a little getting used to
Reply:the permanant veneers will feel much better
Reply:Oh yes, they will feel much better. When I make temporary veneers for a patient, I tend to splint them together, because they are sorta like fake fingernails, and are cemented with the equivilant of Elmers glue. Splinting them together does make it impossible to floss them, but it makes it less likely that they will fall off while we are waiting for the permanents. As far as them being bulky, since they are made of acrylic, they have to be thicker so that they don't break. If they were as thin as the permanants will be, they would end up chipping and breaking. But the permanants won't be that thick. The sensitivity is normal, because the temps dont fit as precise as the permanants will, and they probably aren't sealed around the edges very well. Again, the permanants wont be that bad.

Congratulations on your new veneers. I bet they will look great.

Porcelain veneers!!! info please?

how many veneers do you need to get a good result? plus does anyone know about the Nusmile paper thin veneers by the hospital group? are these better then the normal veneers? thanks xxx

Porcelain veneers!!! info please?
Hello, don't get mislead by a trade name with regard to veneers. Veneers are either made from porcelain or a type of plastic composite material. Both look good, but porcelain, at lest at this time, offers the most longevity. I do feel that the composite materials offer better color when being really thin is required. On the other hand porcelain offers better light reflection and refractory which results in a more vibrant life appearance. Cost wise there isn't a great deal of difference. Remembering of course that dental fees are not based on "a going rate" or "a fair percentage of profit"...they are based on what the doctor thinks he or she can get and that often has to do with ego and self importance as to what they think their special talent is worth. There is an old axiom among factions of the dental profession that says you can determine the fee structure of a dental office by counting the mini-skirted employees it has...i.e. It's a three, four or six mini-skirt office etc. I think you get the point.....I wish you well.

Porcelain veneers or Bonded Veneers?

I'm getting veneers next month to get solid color teeth in the front instead of decalcification. Can someone tell me if porcelain or bonded veneers would be a better option? Thanks

Porcelain veneers or Bonded Veneers?
I had 4 bondings on my upper front teeth for many years. I was constantly having my boss (dentist) repair them. They stained and chipped alot. Porcelain veneers are so much more natural looking because they have a bit of translucency to them, not just a piece of composite on there. I've had my porcelains now for 10 years and not one has had to be replaced. The cost difference though is something to take into consideration. Huge difference in price with the porcelains being the more expensive of the two. Composite bondings have changed though since I had them in the early 1990's....the material is stronger and more natural looking....so maybe they'd work for you. If you have habits that stain your teeth (smoking, coffee, cola) I'd sure lean toward the porcelains though. Good luck....hope this helped.

*yes, i just went in and edited my typo....sheesh i end up with weird typos sometimes*
Reply:I used to work as an assistant for a cosmetic dentist. Porcelain is more expensive but more permanent. They will last for many years. With porcelain, they are actually made at a lab and cemented into place. Bonding is done right in the dental office. Bonding is temporary and may only last a year or less. I have seen bonding last for a few years but that has been the exception to the rule. The material for bonding is not as strong. Also bonding can stain (turn more yellow) but porcelain will not. If you don't have the money for porcelain, bonding is a great temporary option so you can save up some money. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Reply:my front teeth have bonded veneers, Porcelain are better, my dentist told me so.. and my one tooth keeps chipping nd i always have to go get it fixed. (I'm only 20) and once i have dental insurance again and have a good job I'm going to get Porcelain veneers. (my teeth were just spaced out and small. )

Repairing damaged porcelain veneers?

I have porcelian veneers on the front upper teeth. This procedure has been done recently and I've noticed that two of the veneers have one horizonal fractures to each and one has a vertical fracture toward the side of the veneer. I have made a few comments to my dentist during my visits and she stated that it is only glue and she would have them completely buffed out when the bottom teeth are completed and that I will be pleased with the results. What problems later will I run into due to these fractures that I have noticed that she has sealed with something from a tube that required a light to be held to the teeth at the end of the procedure? I have no pain from these two teeth but I can still feel the fractured areas with my fingernail. The dentist states that the areas will be fine when everything is completed. I have already paid in full for all of the veneers to the bottom and top teeth. Am I going to have problems later with these two teeth?

Seriously, have you considered getting a second opinion from

Do veneers tend to break/fall off easier if you go to a dentist for a rather painful scale and polish?

This happened to my husband, he went to a dentist for a scale and polish 2 weeks ago - its really the first time he went in nearly 5 years. He's never been to this particular dentist before - it was his first visit since moving away from his hometown. He said when the dentist polished his teeth with the drills and tools, it hurt. Afterwards, his gums and teeth felt nice and clean. He wasn't sure if the dentist was a bit too rough on his teeth? He's never had a problem with his veneer before, and has always been pretty rough with it (he's had it for about 7 years now).

However, during Christmas eve dinner 2 days ago, his veneer at the front broke and fell out when he bit on a duck bone whilst eating duck.

I'm now wondering if a scale and polish at a dentist could cause your veneers to break/fall off more easily afterwards??

Do veneers tend to break/fall off easier if you go to a dentist for a rather painful scale and polish?
The typical reason for a veneer to come off is due to a pressure applied when biting by pulling or tugging; all of which can "torque a tooth" or teeth causing it to flex, the veneer is "not flexible" so it breaks free or fractures on the natural tooth.

Most likely, he bit too hard on the "duck's bone" and pulled or tugged the meat with this tooth which torqued it and caused it to fracture, or popped it off. A cleaning wouldn't have "caused" the veneer to come off or even become loose. When a veneer comes "completely off" it "needs" to come off because of a problem, such as a cement failure, leaking or decay. Something would have caused the cement to fail, a cleaning doesn't. If it had been tugged on too hard it would have broke then, not later.

The good part is that it can be re-cemented back, "if" it didn't break or fracture when it came off. Your husband should see a dentist soon for a re-cement, and in the mean time, be very careful with the veneer. They are very fragile since they are made of a very thin glass.
Reply:You could never prove that the dentist was at fault. Besides that, the simple act of biting down on duck bone is the likely culprit. Veneers are not capable of standing up to that kind of punishment. It is for that reason that some dentists prefer crowns over veneers. They can take more punishing biting stresses without failing.

Veneers for slight overbite?

I have a slight overbite, nothing major or too noticeable. Anyways, I may get veneers someday for mild orthodontic problems. I was wondering how veneers can help with the appearance of an overbite. Obviously veneers don't fix the overbite, but how does the dentist fix the appearance? Thanks!

Veneers for slight overbite?
It is conceivable that you might have veneers applied to the front surface of your top teeth, making the teeth appear to be thicker and as if they were located in front of your bottom teeth. One problems to consider, though, is that your bottom teeth would really be putting a lot of force right at the edge of the veneers and this would create a greater risk than normal for breaking the veneers. For approximately the same money as veneers, you might consider getting caps (crowns) on the front teeth. Ask your dentist. Your exact position would make a difference, but it might be less likely to lead to broken porcelain if you could have caps placed. You would not be biting down onthe interface where the veneer is bonded to the tooth if you went this direction.

Veneers end up being crowns? :(?

well he said the lab said he could do my top front 6 teeth with veneers. Boy were they wrong...

I went there today for the "try-in" or whatever hoping everything was going to be fine. First thing I had problems with today was that my temps were a %^$%^$@ to get out. I had them for a month and they werent coming out easily no way. He commented on how great those temps looked and how odd it was there were in my mouth so good without any type of cement.

Next thing after a while of getting the temps out. He tried in the veneers and was quickly disappointed and showed me in the mirror why. The veneers did not close the gap right in the 2 spots on my teeth that had huge gaps. One of the gaps was %26gt;3mm close to 4 I believe and the other side had one that was about 2mm I think.

He showed me in the mirror that they touched the gum but did not really go far enough over.

Veneers end up being crowns? :(?
usually it takes 3 wks for vaneers to get back from the lab-PLEASE TELL ME you didnt go to a really new or an extremely old dentist!!!! Or a dentist that is very inexpensive. We do vaneers all of the time and have never had to go to a crown after prepping for a vaneer correctly- btw he used an electrosurge on your gums and did burn excess gum tissue - this is unusual for front teeth but not for back ones- we use cord dipped in hemodent to shrink back the gums to take the impressions btw again vaneer temps are a b%#$%26amp;* to get off sometimes!!!

Can 'permanent' porcelain veneers be replaced? Is it difficult to detach the veneer? How is it done?

I had 4 veneers placed. They look more yellow then my front 2 teeth. My front 2 teeth are naturally quite white. I have had a nightmare dentist and he had no artistic eye. He even chipped the permanent veneers. The dentist is now complete and I want to go to another dental clinic and have completely new veneers done. My question is how difficult it will be for the dentist to remove the veneers? Also will it cause trauma to my teeth?

Thanks.....

Please make sure that you speak to other patients of the dentist before doing any dental procedures. It is unfortunate when one is at the mercy of a dentist ......

Can 'permanent' porcelain veneers be replaced? Is it difficult to detach the veneer? How is it done?
its quite easy to remove and replace them.. the dentist will just cut a fissure in the middle and then break it off the tooth using something looking like a screwdriver. it wont break the tooth... the cement is less strong and will break before the tooth.

Veneers or tooth bonding?

I've got a gap between my front teeth that I've been looking to get fixed for awhile. I talked to my dentist and he said that I had two options: veneers or bonding. Which is better?

Veneers are pretty expensive, so I've been leaning towards bonding. If you can give me reason to splurge on veneers, by all means go ahead.

Veneers or tooth bonding?
well you can get either of them ,since front teeth are of aesthetic importance veneers are the best option for filling the gap in front teeth!

veneers have a success history in serving the purpose !

Can you replace veneers while having lingual braces on?

I'm distressed over my current situation right now. Because of an accident -- which I'm not going to go into --, I had to have four veneers put in (on all my incisors). Now, it's only been two months with these veneers and I need braces. ... I NEED braces. My bite is terrible. My upper and lower teeth are not occlusive and I have an overbite, which is only pronounced by my upper front teeth jutting out a bit.

I'm planning on replacing my veneers (because they don't look too good) but I can't do it right now because of financial reasons. The only thing I can do at the moment is fix my bite but seeing as how that'll take a few years, I'm positive that I'll be able to get my veneers replaced within a year. Would I be able to replace my veneers with the lingual braces on?

I know I should ask my dentists (ortho and cosmetic dentist) but it's already after-hours. I just came back from the orthodontist and I was so dismal at the office I couldn't think straight. Anyway, I'm just anxious. Any answers would be very much appreciated.

Can you replace veneers while having lingual braces on?
its ok to feel the way you do:) i would feel the same way too...your very smart to think the way you do...it is possible to replace you veneers with linual braces on because lingual means the braces are on the inside of the teeth and veneers are on the outside of the teeth,so you will be ok...they're should be no problem at all:)

Veneers or Crowns - which one stronger and last longer?

I lost a lot of teeth structure and at the beginning I thought about veneers then I found web sites about crown which sounds better if you've lost lots of teeth structure.

So which one is stronger and last longer? I'm interested in crowns. I think crowns will be better since it works like a cap while veneers only covers the front surface? It should last longer than veneers as it can fall off. I guess crowns can last forever since it has stronger bonding? How long it will last?

What's the difference for PFM(what's that stand for?) crowns, ceramic crowns, porcelain crowns?

Thank you for your help.

Veneers or Crowns - which one stronger and last longer?
Crowns will definately last longer than veneers. I'm not sure which choice is best for you in what type of crown, a ceramic or porcelain would be best, without metal inside of it - they will show a slight line at your gums and look somewhat unnatural. Your dentist will help you make the best decision. A crown may occasionally need replaced, I am assuming that you are talking about front teeth (they typically only veneer front teeth) but the important thing to remember is that with crowns on a front tooth, they are there more for cosmetic appearance than for chewing. Tough sandwiches, apples, or the like should be cut up instead of bitten into, this will add to the lifetime of your crown if you don't use it as a biting tool. They can, sometimes, need replacing - if the dentist hasn't removed all of the decay, or if the tooth has further problems like an abcess later on, the crown may need to be replaced. Or, if the cement fails, it may need to be cemented again. Hope this helps you! Good luck.
Reply:PFM probably stands for porcelain over fine metal. Thats better. You don't want base metal crowns.

Having lost substantial structure, crown is probably the best way to go.

They last a long time, but eventually you will want them re-done as your gums recede. They should look good for 5 years but up to 20 years or longer. You still need to practice good dental hygiene. Have your teeth cleaned and inspected twice a year.
Reply:Bottom line.. Crowns and Veneers can last just as long as the other... They can last 6 months, they can last 30 years...it all depends on YOU!

PFM= Porcelain Fused To Metal

Porcelain= exactly that... its porcelain!

Ceramic= exactly that..its ceramic!

A crown covers the whole entire tooth.

A veneer covers ONLY the front surface of a tooth.

You would think a crown would be stronger than Veneers. Fact is, their both made with strong materials. But you cant put a time line on either one. Your the one in control of that... With proper care, they'll both last for a long time.

My suggestion.. back teeth i would have crowns (veneers dont go in the back anyways) For the front teeth i would have either Veneers or All Porcelain or All Ceramic crowns done there. NOT a PFM. PFM's after time, your gums can pull away from it, and the metal shows through. Which then, shows a blackish color around your gum line. Not attractive!!

Hope this helps....
Reply:IF you can afford implants in the front i'd go with that but if it's a choice between the corwns or the veneers -- CROWNS all the way! i had a great dentist who did from front 6 uppers all at the same time - it was a long day but that way i had the same color all at the same time and such.

crowns will last a good 10+ years and do civer the majority of the tooth. in the smile line do the porcelin on porcelin - they reflect or refract light so they look natural - people have NO CLUE i have them - top andbottom 6 AND a variety of others in the back. in the back for the porcelin on metal as they are stronger and that's where you bite mostly AND they are cheaper! PFM is porcelin fused to metal and fine for those teeth not in the smile line.

if you're in the detroit area i'd be happy to share my dentist's information - she was amazing - my teeth are set a little off center and she even fixed that with just thr crowns -- she had a double major in college - dental and art - she's great on reconstructive.

if you itemize on your taxes -- you'll be able to write the out of pocket off on your taxes!
Reply:If a lot of tooth structure is missing then a crown is probably going to be the way to go. Yes, there are all kinds of different crowns out there. If you're talking about front teeth (really anything you see in your smile) usually, all porcelain crowns are the way to go. They have a newer all porcelain crown out that is very strong and looks VERY natural, it's called a lava crown. We've had wonderful results with it. There are also porcelain crowns with a metal sub-structure and these work very well for molars. The best thing for you is to consult with a dentist. Good luck
Reply:this is not a decision that you get to make. the dentist tells you after you tell the result you are looking for. sometimes i do a 3/4 crown. sometimes it's a veneer that wraps over the incisal edge but not the lingual surface. you need not concern yourself with the details.
Reply:I have a veneer on my front tooth that's been there for 25 years and looks as good as the day it was put in - but it really doesn't get much wear.

I had a crown put in about a month ago. I'll let you know how that is in 30 years.
Reply:If you have lost alot of tooth structure veneers may not be the way to go.

Veneers are like Lee press on nails. A thin layer of tooth structure is removed from the front of your tooth. They are made of porcelain and are usually used for cosmetic reasons only b/c they are really thin.

If you are looking for a functional method, your best bet is a crown. They are stronger and do last longer. Not forever though. A crown can last between 10 and 15 yrs...sometimes longer.

A PFM crown stands for porcelain fused to metal. And is exactly just that. A ceramic crown is made from ceramic and a porcelain crown is made from just porcelain.

Your best bet would be to talk it over w/ your dentist. He or she is very knowledgable when it comes to these things. It's great that you are doing some research on this subject, but let your dentist make that decision for you.

There are other issues that would make veneers the way to go, but in your case it sounds like PFM should be used. They are reinforced with a metal alloy underneath the porcelain shell. You can not see the metal at all in the front and only a little metal shows on the lingual side (tongue side) so you do not see that either. The only one who will know it is there is your dentist. It will be matched exactly to your tooth shade and will blend in nicely.

I would wait to everything is inline. I dont know much about lingual braces since there are so many new kinds of ortho, but im sure your dentist and ortohodontist would work together with you for this. Plus i always recd before anyone puts crowns or veneers on front teeth to consider bleaching first since you cant change the color of the porcelain after it is cemented on. Especially in front teeth, cosmectically speaking.

Porcelain Veneers?

Hello everyone. I had a question regarding porcelain veneers. I was thinking about getting them but had a question. I heard that the veneers last about 15-20, then you have to replace them. Well, do the veneers just start chipping away? Do they start to fall off? I don't get it. Is it something that happens underneath the veneers that others can't see? I would hate to get them if after 10 years, it visibly starts chipping or something. I would appreciate info from anyone that knows. Thank you

Porcelain Veneers?
There's a variety of reason why veeners fail after 15-20 years as you said. It all depends on a few things:

1) how much tooth it's replacing

small veneers that are purely on the front part should last near forever. they aren't in contact with anything, they don't extend to the back of the teeth or rub on anything except lips, tongue, and air. Large veneers are asked to do little more and aren't as strong

2) cement

today's cements are heck of alot better than cements from 30, 20, and, even 10 years ago. Back in the 80's the cements used were good only for small veneers and attached only to the enamel part of our teeth. So if these leaked all the time, discoloring the edges of the veener. Today's cement bond to everything: enamal and dentin.

So how they fail?

1) the most common is leakage. despite the cements of today, most are very technique sensitive and alittle mistake can go a long way.

2) design: veeners are super easy to do , however, if you design them so that they do contact with opposing teeth or your prone to eating rocks daily, you can get some chipping.

Most cost about $1500-2000 each and personal well worth it. Ask your dentist more questions and do some additional reseach cause it can be alot of money!

Take care

Tooth veneers?

I'm thinking of getting tooth veneers. I have quite crooked teeth. It's not that noticable really but they're uneven. I am missing the tooth to the left of the front teeth on one side but all the other teeth have shifted over so there's no gap. What I want to know is how much are veneers, would they be able to make it look like I had all the teeth if they filed them all down and added veneers on top and put an extra tooth in? Has anyone had veneers before? I've heard they're cheaper abroad. I live in England.

Tooth veneers?
You can't just make a tooth appear with veneers. In order to get another tooth you would need to see an orthodontist to put space in upper arch, which they may think is crazy since they try to close spaces, then you can put on implant there with a crown that will match the shade of you other teeth. I am not sure what type of bracket the first girl was talking about but you do not want a flipper or partial that you can take out like a retainer. they look very cheap and they will break, the implant would be the best option and they will last.
Reply:I have a veneer on my front tooth. The FRONT! It sucks, but luckily the way they did, I didn't have to file down the two on each side of it.

This is a major decision as a veneer becomes a liability.

Why you may say?

Well because if they fall out or get cracked, you have to fork up the money to get them fixed or replaced. It was against my decision to get a veneer, I knew better than to get it, but my parents told me that it would be for the best...To this day I regret it.

Braces are the better way of going in my opinion, have the dentist go in and space the tooth thats missing, and have a bracket put in. They're cheaper, reliable, and look JUST like a real tooth. The benefit? You're still missing the tooth now, but at least you can pop in the bracket and your good to go.

I wish you the best in your decision. Good luck.

Had dental veneers done but 1 tooth is misaligned again!?

Hi,

Could do with abit of advice before I go see my dentist on Friday. I had 4 veneers done on my upper front teeth back in August this year and on the whole I was pleased with the results.

For the last 2 months or so I've noticed 1 of the front teeth with a veneer on has moved outwards slightly and is noticeable, at least to me anyway. They were all straight to begin with and paying so much money to get them done in the first place I'm now not happy and want to do something about it.

I would like to know whether that would mean having to pay for another veneer to re-allign it with my other teeth that are veneered, or whether there was a procedure to file the veneer down to make it thinner and therefore more in line with the rest?

I'm guessing it's the tooth that's at fault? I was told because I have hd fillings in this tooth previously, it's not as strong? I have also been using a mouthguard on my bottom teeth when whitening them, is this catching my upper tooth moving it?

Dental Veneers?

My dentist suggested veneers as one method of tooth whitening.

One question that came to mind was tooth color can really be affected by what you eat.

Since most teeth are naturally stained and I drink a lot of coffee, if I got veneers, wouldn't they just get stained over time as well.

What would therefore be the point of getting veneers considering what I read about them included that you have to have your teeth shaved down slightly to install the veneers and that this process really is a permanent one.

Dental Veneers?
I have veneers on my upper teeth (the front 10), had the first 6 done about 15 years ago, and I feel qualified to answer your question.

I first read about veneers while waiting in the dentist's waiting room, and the brochure said 'ask your dentist what veneers can do for you'. So, I did. He said veneers would be wonderful, so I went for it (the front 6). My own teeth weren't THAT bad, but they weren't movie star either, so I thought it would be great. What I didn't realize was that they jackhammer the enamel off of your teeth first, I guess I had the idea the veneers would pop on the way false fingernails do. The veneers were WAY too white and didn't match the teeth around them, and they were too thick and square. They looked awful. A year later I got them replaced with veneers that were a better color, and got my natural teeth reduced so they didn't end up so thick-looking. Last year I got the 6 replaced with nicer veneers yet, plus another 4 teeth so the entire top is done.

Problems with my veneers: the shape of my top teeth don't coordinate with the shape of my bottom teeth; the color of my top teeth are whiter than my bottom teeth (even though I was aware of shade problems, I still ended up with a color difference).

Your veneers will break if you chew your fingernails. Take my word.

This dental work has cost me a fortune over time. Would I do it again? No, my real teeth weren't that bad. Braces/whitening would have been cheaper, and it wouldn't need to be redone. And veneers don't stain like the rest of your teeth, so you will need to keep whitening your natural teeth if you want them to match.
Reply:All-porcelain restorations are the latest, most natural looking application of the art and science of cosmetic dentistry. Porcelain veneers or full porcelain crowns are generally the esthetic restorations crafted for patients that you see on make-over shows. The process enables the dentist to close spaces, visually rotate teeth, and give the appearance and function of a natural smile.

For decades dentists have had materials available that create a durable bond to tooth enamel. Porcelain veneer techniques utilize these bonding capabilities to securely affix a thin sheet of porcelain (the porcelain veneer) to the front of a tooth or to bond a full-coverage porcelain crown into place. The most effective and appropriate type of porcelain restoration can only be determined after clinical examination.

Although porcelain itself is inherently brittle, when it is firmly bonded to a sturdy substructure (a tooth) it becomes very strong and durable. One property of the tooth's enamel covering is that it is translucent in its undamaged natural state. The translucent property is an important component that gives teeth their characteristic appearance. Porcelain veneers and crowns, because of their glass-like translucency, are esthetically superior to other types of cosmetic dental bonding. When bonded onto a tooth's surface the porcelain mimics the characteristics of natural, unadulterated enamel. This translucency provides a sense of depth and thus a very natural appearance.

The main disadvantage being the cost $1200 per tooth, and the insurance won't cover it. However, attractive options have become available in travelling to less costly countries like Thailand, India, Dubai, Singapore, etc. where it costs $200-250 per tooth. You may also explore internet to search for something like Hollywood dream smile dentists in India, etc.
Reply:Veneers are a very acceptable and nice way to solve whitening issues as well as minor orthodontic issues. Veneers will not stain so that would not be a future problem and if you are worried about prepping your teeth ask your dental professional about prepless veneers (lumineers).

Veneers or braces?

I’ve had a bit of an alignment problem with my teeth for a while and I’ve finally decided to get it fixed with veneers, but when I got to the dentist I was informed that veneers would not be the best options because I have a cross bite (the canine tooth on the bottom row overlaps with one of the tooth in the front row),she said if I got veneers it would get dislodged/crack or break when I bite and this would be a problem cause veneers can’t be replaced. I was wondering what other cosmetic surgery can be done to fix this problem, because the only other options she gave me were to get braces and I am not really interested in that, I think I am too old for that. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem with the cross bite?

Thanks, your reply is greatly appreciated.

Veneers or braces?
First of all you are never too old for braces! If you want nice teeth you are clearly not too old ;) Secondly there are alternate options to all that metal. You could get invisaline (but I'm not sure if that is available for that severe of a crossbite, idk if it is that bad but you made it sound pretty pronounced) I see older people with them more and more these days (mostly women) Don't get veneers if they are going to break, plus fixing your teeth with braces is forever and veneers need update after like 10 years or so. Which is annoying. But do what makes you happy! If cracked veneers would be what makes you that way...=P I am not much help with surgery options, but that seems a little extreme when you could just get braces...which are not that bad. I should know I had them for like 4 years.
Reply:what are veneers?
Reply:Cosmetic Dentistry is the awnser in your case. Take to your dentist about your options.
Reply:What about the Invisalign? That might be an option. Wow, I didn't know that everyone can't get veneers. Thanks for that info.
Reply:Veneers are for closing gaps. They can not correct a cross bite. In your case braces should be used.
Reply:You are never too old for braces. People in their 30's, 40's, and 50's have them nowadays. But since you're not interested in that, invisalign may be the way to go. They're clear braces and they're not noticeable. The only person that will notice is you and whoever you tell. Veneers can also run up quite a bill. I've heard $2,000 per tooth. I'd rather get the braces. You're better off getting invisalign or braces. Good luck!
Reply:your best option would definately be braces, if you go with veneers and have alignment problems, guess what, you can cause too much pressure and loosen them over a period of time, they will pop off after the cement breaks loose.

Veneers and how do they work?

I have Veneers on my top two front teeth. One tooth was knocked out (a small bit of real tooth remained), the other was cracked. The one that is missing has rods and filling in place behind the Veneer. My question is this. I just had to have them replace (within six months of getting them). The both chipped and broke. Should I assume Veneers are very tender and I will forever have to not eat certain things and be very careful with them? They look incredible, but I am feeling like I wish I would have gotten caps. What are some pointers for having Veneers?

Veneers and how do they work?
they file the tooth down to where it resembles a stub. veneers last a long time but not forever..you also cannot bite into apples, you have to slice them from now on..never use your front teeth to bite into anything or they will possibly break or come off..veneers are more delicate...if you chew on something hard try chewing on the sides of your teeth rather than biting into something. if you do find it is hard to maintain them you can always do caps later on nothing is forever..the rod you've explained they can put a cap on that too...they do what you call a build up and put a cap over it.good luck:)
Reply:You should think of veneers like fake fingernails. They are cemented on the front of the tooth like a fake fingernail would be. They are thin so you have to be careful with them. You should not bite directly into anything that is really hard because they will break.

Veneers and retainers?

im getting veneers on my upper four front teeth. can i still wear my retainers even though the veneers are on or will the retainer damage the veneers? oh yeah! and will i be able to bite into a burger with the four veneers on my front teeth?

Veneers and retainers?
You will probably need to get impressions for a new retainer, or maybe your dentist can adjust the one you have to the way your veneers will be sitting. And yes you will be able to bite into a hamburger. I wouldn't bite into a candy apple though :-O. Make sure you have before and after photos!

Have my dental veneers moved in my mouth?

Hi,

I could do with abit of advice.

3 months ago, I had 4 veneers and a crown done on my upper teeth which I was happy with at the time. I went back a couple of weeks later as I thought they had changed colour.

My dentist advised me, that doesn't happen with poreclain veneers and put it down to me being paranoid.

I purchased some supersmile which was great and found they looked brighter than they did before.

In the last couple of weeks I've noticed that 2 of the 4 veneers (the front 2) look darker than the other 2. I don't understand why that would be, if they were all made together and are supposedly of the same colour shade, in the same light they should look the same.

I've also noticed in the last couple of weeks, my bite has changed slightly.

I dont know whether I've been grinding them while I've been sleeping but I can see the

difference when I smile. They were straight when I had them first done, now my front 2 teeth are not aligned and also another has started to lean outwards on the side.

I have booked myself to go back to the Dentist next week as I would like another veneer

doing on another tooth, however I'm going to have to raise my concerns regarding the ones

she's already done.

Have the veneers shifted or has my teeth?

What can the dentist do to fix it? Can they get the veneers off to realign them or

would I have to spend another £2K to get them done again, which I won't be happy about doing!

I know I'm going to see her next week but a heads up on some of the questions I've got

may prepare me.

thanks

Have my dental veneers moved in my mouth?
The only thing I can think of with your veneers changing colour is that some of them are thicker than the others, therefore more colour from your orginal tooth is showing through the thinner ones and maker it appear darker. As your dentist said, veneers will not change colour, so it would be your real tooth. As for them moving, thats kinda big deal because they obviously shouldn't do that! You shouldn't have to pay for them again though, as your dentist should reattach them or suggest another plan depending on the situation. Just be firm with what you want and don't back down or be afraid. You paid good money for these teeth and are entitled to get your moneys worth! Good Luck!!!

Veneers reassurance?

Hi,

I had 5 veneers done on my upper front teeth a couple of months ago. I make extra sure I keep them in tip top condition, even if one of them has now misaligned and am going back to see my dentist on Friday, anyway that's a different issue!

I have a question in regards to colour. I use Supersmile to keep them looking as good as possible but am paranoid sometimes they aren't bright enough as they used to be and have doubts they are good quality?

In certain light they look yellow and dark, or is this me being paranoid? I can take a photo with my digital camera in the same light and they look ok and white? is the camera deceiving tho? In natural light in the daytime they look white and in the dark like in a club they are bright. Is this the way veneers should be with different types of light?

Should I have gone to a diff dentist for more expensive veneers?is this why the cost varies so much? They cost between £200 and £800 here in the UK, i paid £200 per veneer

Veneers reassurance?
I don't know prices in UK but as with almost anything in life, you get what you pay for. If you searched out for the cheapest ones, well that person has a lower price for one of two reasons, or both reasons. #1 they are not confident/good at doing veneers. #2 they are using a cheap lab, cheap lab=less talented lab tech, and/or using cheap materials.
Reply:The difference is not the dentist but on the matrial used. You should have opted for a more stable material such as porcelain. Resins, especially self curing ones get easily discolored.

Unlike them, porcelain has 3 layers of base, opaquer, and metal to equalize any change in color.

Hope this helps.

Veneers (sorry if i have mis spelt it)?

I was just wondering.. can veneers be used for any gaps.. no matter how small or large they are? Or are there some instances where veneers cant be used? I have a gap in my teeth and was hoping to use veneers to close it but it is abit of a sticky situation because when I bite a tooth from the bottom is obstructing where I think the veneer is meant to go. Hope this makes sense!

Veneers (sorry if i have mis spelt it)?
This is a very tricky situation because the bottom teeth are obstructing the place of the intended veneer. Veneer is not a very strong material, it is either made of porcelain or composite. If the force generate by the lower teeth is great, it may fracture the veneer. Visit your dentist and see what he can do, he may need to do crowns instead. Porcelain crown will work well in your case, but more tooth structure will be ground away. It will be a waste depending on your point of view. Either way , you have to think very carefully and whether the treatment will be successful depends heavily on the expertise of your dentist. See a prosthodonist instead, they have better knowledge on this situation than a general practitioner, but they cost more.
Reply:i dont really understand ur question, but they can be used to close gaps, if ur gap is really big they may only be able to make it smaller (other wise ull look like u have horse teeth. As far as your other tooth overlapping, they can file it down.

Veneers!questions?

well like i said in the other..i just got the veneers(THE TEMPORARY ONES)WHICH I HATE Cuz they look biggisgh, dont feel all that good, and look fakeish u know...i hope the real veneers will look better..:(i got the veneers on my 4 front teeth..

but what i dont get y??..did they put the "temporary ones" how come they didnt put the real veneers how come they need 2 weeeeks?i dont get y they put the temporary veneers then the real ones...hmmm....

Help me appriciated Thanx Guys!!(HONEST AWNSERS)

Veneers!questions?
The real veneers will and should look perfect. If not tell your dentist BEFORE he cements the final veneers. and ask for them to be changed, which will take another 2 weeks. (has to be resent to the dental lab for the changes)

You have temps because a dental lab has to make the final veneers, which takes 2-3 weeks.

You want them to take a few week so that they can and will look perfect. The veneers are a very complex procedure using porclean and a porclean oven to make them. The actual procedure is very precise and complex, but trust me you want it done this way and not done the same day.

If you need more info you can email me at docfrankie@hotmail.com
Reply:They need to removed tooth structure from the front of your tooth to make room for the porcelain veneers. Be happy that you only have to wait two weeks for your veneers; at my office you have to wait a month! Sorry that you don't like your temporaries but they are only there for a short amount of time. Usually, the temps look a bit like your teeth before they were prepped for the veneers.
Reply:They have to be made by technicians in a dental laboratory. Remember the goo the dentist put in your mouth? This was to get an impression of your teeth so they could make an exact replica of your teeth for use in the lab. The "real" veneers are custom made, just for you, and this takes a while.

If you could just take some "off the rack" and glue them in, they'd be a lot cheaper.
Reply:I just got my veneers a week ago and was in my temps for 3 weeks. I really liked my temps and they did not cause any sensitivity or fear for them falling out! (keep in mind I am one of those VERY sensitive-teeth people). Honestly, the temps were better looking than my natural teeth so I was pretty happy with them......altho I did notice around week 2 that they seemed a little opaque (solid......not translucent.....such as plastic is). They put u in temps so u can adjust the temps as you want your veneers to be and then they take that mold of them and the mold is what the ceramiscist works from. VERY IMPORTANT and useful steps I think. And, when my veneers came in I did NOT like them and my doctor sent them back gladly to have the lab make another set. The second set now live in my mouth and I LOVE them :) They match my natural teeth EXACTLY it's quite amazing. Anyhow, hang in there......consider your temps 60% of what your veneers will be. And if the veneers don't look "right", SEND EM BACK!! Your dentist should be glad to do it :) Best of luck and congrats on your new beautiful veneers!

How long do veneers last & is the grinding part painful? If veneers fall off, how will the grinded teeth look?

My cosmetic dentist told me that at my age of 15 (4 months from 16) that veneers are the best solution to the space in between my 2 front teeth (about 2-3.5 mm. of space?) But my parents are worried about the grinding procedure. They have heard that it is painful %26amp; if the veneers fall off, then my grinded teeth will look even more awful %26amp; that they will have to pay AGAIN for new veneers to get my teeth fixed. Also, are there any other solutions to fixing my 2 front teeth (besides braces)? I also wanted veneers because my teeth have gotten stained over the years %26amp; veneers would be a good solution. The before %26amp; after pics look great, but I'm sure the feeling in your mouth is different. Does the feeling take a long time to get used to? What do the temporary veneers look like? Will they look just like my "permanent" veneers but just temporary?

How long do veneers last %26amp; is the grinding part painful? If veneers fall off, how will the grinded teeth look?
I have several veneers on my side front teeth and back. When they shave down your teeth it didn't hurt because they numbed me beforehand. They do run the risk of chipping or having to be replaced over time though. It's best to avoid biting into hard things. Like if you eat an apple, better to cut them up. If you are a night grinder, ask about a night guard. Go to a reputable one. Some veneers are placed on badly and look too big/small or don't match your teeth color. I've had 1 replaced due to this. Once you have them on, spend a good 5 mins or more looking in the mirror saying exaggerated words or letters. Smile and look from the side, front and laugh. That way if anything's off, they can fix it right there. But you should be able to go back and do adjustments at no charge. It took me about a week to get use to. I kept running my tongue over them, lol. Before they match the colors, they may ask you if you would like to do teeth whitening. Because veneer colors are hard to change after they're put on. Other alternatives are Lumineers, bonding or braces. Lumineers, I have two in the front to cover a gap, doesn't require shaving and no numbing. It is pricey though. Mines were $1600 each. There's bonding also. I got those to cover tiny gaps. They ran me about $200-$350 each. They can get stained overtime though. Braces cost me $5000 but even after, gaps formed later on. If it is staining, strips, trays or laser whitening may help. Otc strips cost about $30. I am currently on ones from my dentist and they're $100. Trays were very effective for me and cost $300. You just buy the refills and have the convenience of doing it at home if you see stains appear. Laser runs about $500-$1000. I haven't tried this but seen great results on 2 friends. Prices in So. Ca. Of course, prices vary from dentist to dentist and best to ask what your dentist recommends. =) Be sure to get reg cleanings. Veneers can get slight staining overtime. But not too bad. They did boost my confidence A LOT. I smiled a lot more. Good luck!
Reply:don't do it.

veneers are really really bad!!!!

You'll be wearing dentures by the time you're 30. or sooner.
Reply:Seems like a drastic measure for such minor problems. The gap in your teeth is very small. When you're somewhere between 19-21 or so, your wisdom teeth will come in. These will push your front teeth together. As for the teeth stains, some simple whitening treatments should work.

Just from my own personal experience, when a dentist starts working on healthy teeth, they end up unhealthy and needing more work in the future.

A couple of things to think about:

Because the enamel has to be removed, your tooth may become more sensitive to hot and cold food or drinks.

Yes, veneers can fall off. It's not common but it can happen. Your dentist will probably tell you not bite your nails; chew on pencils, ice, or other hard objects; or otherwise put pressure on your teeth.
Reply:I have veneers, but I am well over 15. This is a cosmetic solution to your problem and may even be more costly than braces. You are only 15, go for the braces. Veneers only last about 10 years and have to be replaced. And yes, your teeth need to go through a grinding procedure to make them fit. And yes it is not painless (though they do give you Novocain). I am still grinding my teeth at night. I have to wear a night guard to protect my veneers, which is another cost. Have your parents spend the money on braces. Then get your teeth whitened. When you get older, you can buy veneers if you are still unsatisfied with the way your teeth look.
Reply:there is another option..you could get crowns...they look good..seen them done..think they are cheaper...and they do last longer..no risk of chipping and breaking them..veneers do look great but there is a big chance on them chipping and breaking or just falling off..many patients who have that done come in because they've fallen off or broke..too much money and agrivation to get new ones..they do look nice but ask about the option of crowns..they will last longer and you wont have to worry as much with them..with veneers you can never bite into anything you would have to slice an apple and eat it that bite into it.but to answer your questions the temporarys look like veneers just temporary, you are right....andthe dentist will give you novicaine so you dont feel anything...if you do dont be afraid to ask for more..you can also get sweet air to calm your nerves during the procedure as well to help you relax more...in either case they grind your teeth down to stubbs...i had this done four time...as long as you are nimb it doesnt hurt, not lying..and i like the sweet air:) at least with crowns you wont have the worry of them falling off as much as you do with veneers..
Reply:I would recommend not getting the veneers. I have heard horror stories and seen terrible results. If you absolutely are dead set on veneers make sure you are going to an excellent and reputable cosmetic dentist. Once you get veneers done you can reverse the process!!! However, by the sounds of it, your teeth are healthy. Stains can be fixed. By strips at your local walmart. If those aren't strong enough, ask you dentist to bleach your teeth to make them whiter. Also, if you are dead-set against braces you might try invisalign. A gap inbetween the front teeth isn't a big deal and could most likely be fixed in a much easier fashion than veneers.

Why veneers won't last?

I've seen from the internet and in here that people say it can last 10, 20 years or more depends if the person take good care of it.

So why they won't last? Is it after many years the veneers material worn down(so it chipped or break)? Or the cement between teeth and veneers not strong enough that after many years it will just pop out or fall off? Anyone know which case occurred the most that the veneers won't last or need to be replace?

Also regarding color, the internet said u can choose the color that match your teeth but I like to know how they do the color? Do they just paint it on the veneers so it match? If I choose it wrong, then can I ask them to change it during the last appointment?

I've chipped teeth and if I do veneers then it will look maybe half or more than half will be veneers. Will it still be strong enough?

I hope someone will understand what I'm saying and can answer me.

Thank you.

Why veneers won't last?
There is no a dental restoration that last a life time, is a prosthetic and the mouth contains a lot of bacteria and a lot chemical changes happen there that over time it will decrease the durability of the dental prosthetic.

However, having a good oral hygiene elongates the life of the veneer in this case.

The veeners are made at a dental laboratory, the dentist has to choose a correct shade (shade guide) for your teeth, usually the dentist chooses the color and then its sent to the lab to be made. You can not change the color, that is why make sure you are comfortable with it the day of your appointment.( Dentist usually choose the best color following the shade of your other teeth).

Veneers usually cover the tooth giving it a very natural appearance, they are made of porcelain most of the time and it looks so real ,they look very good but is up to you to take care of them, keep your cleaning appointments every 6 months so they can keep track of them and improve you oral hygiene at home.

Hope it helps!
Reply:Venner does not change the color, the natural tooth does. Depending on your age, and your habbits teeth stain and if you had veneers done you will need to keep the color checked periodicly and maybe whiten the teeth for them to match the veneers.
