How long do veneers last & is the grinding part painful? If veneers fall off, how will the grinded teeth look?

My cosmetic dentist told me that at my age of 15 (4 months from 16) that veneers are the best solution to the space in between my 2 front teeth (about 2-3.5 mm. of space?) But my parents are worried about the grinding procedure. They have heard that it is painful %26amp; if the veneers fall off, then my grinded teeth will look even more awful %26amp; that they will have to pay AGAIN for new veneers to get my teeth fixed. Also, are there any other solutions to fixing my 2 front teeth (besides braces)? I also wanted veneers because my teeth have gotten stained over the years %26amp; veneers would be a good solution. The before %26amp; after pics look great, but I'm sure the feeling in your mouth is different. Does the feeling take a long time to get used to? What do the temporary veneers look like? Will they look just like my "permanent" veneers but just temporary?

I have several veneers on my side front teeth and back. When they shave down your teeth it didn't hurt because they numbed me beforehand. They do run the risk of chipping or having to be replaced over time though. It's best to avoid biting into hard things. Like if you eat an apple, better to cut them up. If you are a night grinder, ask about a night guard. Go to a reputable one. Some veneers are placed on badly and look too big/small or don't match your teeth color. I've had 1 replaced due to this. Once you have them on, spend a good 5 mins or more looking in the mirror saying exaggerated words or letters. Smile and look from the side, front and laugh. That way if anything's off, they can fix it right there. But you should be able to go back and do adjustments at no charge. It took me about a week to get use to. I kept running my tongue over them, lol. Before they match the colors, they may ask you if you would like to do teeth whitening. Because veneer colors are hard to change after they're put on. Other alternatives are Lumineers, bonding or braces. Lumineers, I have two in the front to cover a gap, doesn't require shaving and no numbing. It is pricey though. Mines were $1600 each. There's bonding also. I got those to cover tiny gaps. They ran me about $200-$350 each. They can get stained overtime though. Braces cost me $5000 but even after, gaps formed later on. If it is staining, strips, trays or laser whitening may help. Otc strips cost about $30. I am currently on ones from my dentist and they're $100. Trays were very effective for me and cost $300. You just buy the refills and have the convenience of doing it at home if you see stains appear. Laser runs about $500-$1000. I haven't tried this but seen great results on 2 friends. Prices in So. Ca. Of course, prices vary from dentist to dentist and best to ask what your dentist recommends. =) Be sure to get reg cleanings. Veneers can get slight staining overtime. But not too bad. They did boost my confidence A LOT. I smiled a lot more. Good luck!
Reply:don't do it.

veneers are really really bad!!!!

You'll be wearing dentures by the time you're 30. or sooner.
Reply:Seems like a drastic measure for such minor problems. The gap in your teeth is very small. When you're somewhere between 19-21 or so, your wisdom teeth will come in. These will push your front teeth together. As for the teeth stains, some simple whitening treatments should work.

Just from my own personal experience, when a dentist starts working on healthy teeth, they end up unhealthy and needing more work in the future.

A couple of things to think about:

Because the enamel has to be removed, your tooth may become more sensitive to hot and cold food or drinks.

Yes, veneers can fall off. It's not common but it can happen. Your dentist will probably tell you not bite your nails; chew on pencils, ice, or other hard objects; or otherwise put pressure on your teeth.
Reply:I have veneers, but I am well over 15. This is a cosmetic solution to your problem and may even be more costly than braces. You are only 15, go for the braces. Veneers only last about 10 years and have to be replaced. And yes, your teeth need to go through a grinding procedure to make them fit. And yes it is not painless (though they do give you Novocain). I am still grinding my teeth at night. I have to wear a night guard to protect my veneers, which is another cost. Have your parents spend the money on braces. Then get your teeth whitened. When you get older, you can buy veneers if you are still unsatisfied with the way your teeth look.
Reply:there is another option..you could get crowns...they look good..seen them done..think they are cheaper...and they do last longer..no risk of chipping and breaking them..veneers do look great but there is a big chance on them chipping and breaking or just falling off..many patients who have that done come in because they've fallen off or broke..too much money and agrivation to get new ones..they do look nice but ask about the option of crowns..they will last longer and you wont have to worry as much with them..with veneers you can never bite into anything you would have to slice an apple and eat it that bite into it.but to answer your questions the temporarys look like veneers just temporary, you are right....andthe dentist will give you novicaine so you dont feel anything...if you do dont be afraid to ask for more..you can also get sweet air to calm your nerves during the procedure as well to help you relax more...in either case they grind your teeth down to stubbs...i had this done four time...as long as you are nimb it doesnt hurt, not lying..and i like the sweet air:) at least with crowns you wont have the worry of them falling off as much as you do with veneers..
Reply:I would recommend not getting the veneers. I have heard horror stories and seen terrible results. If you absolutely are dead set on veneers make sure you are going to an excellent and reputable cosmetic dentist. Once you get veneers done you can reverse the process!!! However, by the sounds of it, your teeth are healthy. Stains can be fixed. By strips at your local walmart. If those aren't strong enough, ask you dentist to bleach your teeth to make them whiter. Also, if you are dead-set against braces you might try invisalign. A gap inbetween the front teeth isn't a big deal and could most likely be fixed in a much easier fashion than veneers.
