Okay, I have had braces for 7 years and not have been to an orthodontist in about 2 years. Now I just want veneers because my teeth are so dull from the braces and are terrbile looking. I was wondering if anyone has had braces and then decided to get veneers? If so, what steps did you take. Can the cosmetic dentist just take the braces off? Or would I have to find an orthodontist to do so?
Braces and then veneers? Has anyone done this?
You need to go see your orthodontist. How did you manage all these years without getting them adjusted. If you have an overbite you may still need the braces yet because you never went back and got the required adjustments. You need to go see your orthodontist. I am surprised your dentist didn't ask how things were going with your braces every time you went in for your 6 month cleaning/checkup?
Reply:You definitely want to explore the option of braces before veneers. Veneers will only mask your problem, will be more expensive, and also destroy your natural tooth structure. I am an Oral Surgeon who was talked into veneers as a young adult. I wish I had never destroyed my natural tooth enamel and had gotten braces. Go to a board certified orthodontist.
Please don't make the smae mistake that I did. If you have any questions, please ask me. By the way, I'm on my 3rd set of veneers.
Reply:Having veneers will require imposing on sound tooth integrity. In other words, most veneers used today, require the dentist to "change" the shape of a sound/healthy tooth, to a smaller size so a veneer can fit over it. If your teeth are healthy, why do that? It could, perhaps, expose you to more problems in the future.
I have heard of dentists using veneers after/instead of braces...but why jeopardize healthy teeth if you don't have to.
I don't know of a dentist who would "touch" ortho treatment from another office. Usually you need to seek help from the original orthodontist who started the treatment from the beginning...I believe it's for liability reasons, but I could be incorrect.
Reply:My dentist told me to do the same thing. If you are unhappy with how your teeth look then do it! Veneers make your teeth look great! They can fix shade and dullness of your teeth. My mom just had them done and they look fantastic! This is a great idea for you especially since your teeth are already straightened from the braces.
