When you get veneers on your teeth, can you still get cavities? I'm assuming not but I'm not sure. Also, how close to your real teeth can they look? I've seen people who just don't look the same after they get them. (Hilary Duff) Last of all, is there any other procedures that are better and last longer?
Veneers on teeth?
hi!
from one dentist's experience and one point of view (coz mind you, more than one dentist often = more than one opinion!)...
-yes, when you get veneers, you can still get cavities.. because you still have your own tooth structure holding up the veneers and your own teeth, if not looked after, can get cavities... especially at the margins of the veneers. after getting veneers you should still brush at least 2x/day and floss every night to keep your veneers and teeth healthy.. and ofcourse watch the frequency of sugary foods and drinks!
-they can look very much like real teeth, if made out of porcelain. hilary duff (like many other celebrities) was prob looking for one of those fake smiles but you CAN make teeth look less hollywood and more real-world and natural.
-as for procedures that last longer - it just depends what you want done and why you're getting veneers - if your teeth are broken down a lot or have very large fillings.. crowns might be a good option and will be stronger and last longer as they cover the whole tooth (whereas veneers are only a 'facing' so they cover the outside-facing part of your front teeth.)
the thing i guess you need to think about is why are you getting veneers.. if you're masking a colour that cannot be lightened by bleaching (whitening), then veneers are the easiest most cost-efficient procedure.. and crowns might be too invasive. but if these teeth that you dont like the look of also have large fillings, crowns can be considered. visit ur local dentist - the best opinion will be given by somebody who can see your teeth and assess your general oral health.
hope i havent bored you and hope this helps!
Reply:Sure you can still get cavities. With veneers (or crowns), where the veneer ends, the tooth begins. That tooth structure can always decay if it is not kept clean.
You can ask your dentist to show you a "mock up" on models of your teeth to see if you like the planned outcome.
Sometimes crowns are a better way to go, but if you have no fillings in your teeth, veneers can be quite satisfactory.
Reply:Yes
Reply:go to see a very good dentist and your veneers will look fantastic hollywood style
Reply:Yes, you can get cavities with veneers - for the porcelain they are made out of will obviously not get decayed, but the real tooth structure they are cemented upon - can definitely get cavities - if you do not keep up a very good oral hygiene regimen.
Before deciding on any procedure, ask you dentist for a mock-up case specifically for you to show exactly what the outcome will look like... I worked for a dentist that did this with models and also with digital photography - so you can see the before and after. If you do not like something in the mock-up - the shape, the shade etc.. you and the dentist work together and get the look you want - to look as natural as you hope for.
Reply:haha. featured question and a small number of answers.
Reply:yes u can get cavities. the veneers just cover up the bad looking parts of your teeth. making them white again. cavity causing materials can still get through the cracks and rot your teeth from the inside out.
