Veneers or crowns??

I've just had two consulations for a smile makeover.

One suggested 16 veneers the other 14 crowns.

What would be better in terms of appearence?

Veneers or crowns??
Well the end result should look pretty much the same. Both crowns and veneers can be made from the same material (porcelain) and, depending on the skill of the dentist and the lab they use, the results can be great with either.

The main difference between the two is how much tooth structure the dentist has to remove (drill away) and the strength of your existing teeth.

A veneer is a covering on the just the part of the tooth you see when you smile. So in terms of drilling, there's much less drilling involved since you're only dealing with 1 surface (some products like Lumineers can be placed with out drilling).

A crown (also called "caps") covers the whole tooth, so all the surfaces of the teeth have to be drilled away to provide space for the material (porcelain)

The veneers are a very conservative way of improving the appearance of your teeth, but sometimes crowns are indicated. For instance you may have some cavities or existing fillings in some of the teeth and a crown may be a better choice since the crown provides full coverage and can be stronger than a veneer (stands up to more forces). Other times crowns are used as your dentist can have more control of not only improving your smile but also your bite ( how you function).

Have you consulted a prosthodontist? If you're considering a full mouth reconstruction, these are the folks who specialize in this area. They can give you multiple treatment plans with the pluses and minuses of each. Some will even work with other specialists (periodontists and orthodontists) to try to restore your smile without having to cut a tooth (which is permanent). Always remember that nothing in dentistry lasts forever and that most likely whatever you have done now will have to be repeated in your lifetime so conservative treatment (braces -yes you can have braces placed on the tongue side of your teeth or invisalign- with gum surgery) vs crowns and veneers may be a better option depending on your age.

Hope this helps.

Reply:maybe veners cos others hav suggested but i have crowns and no problems.
Reply:Whoa....the answer to your question isn't one that can't be easily offered without knowing what condition your teeth are in at present....Color change and only "slight" shape change would suggest that Veneers would be best as they are far less invasive. If on the other hand you have teeth that are both grossly discolored, mis-shapen, out of alignment and possibly has cavities...then the best way to go would no doubt be Crown's....While your making up your mind about which you want to consider, if of course you have a reasonable option, know also that the cost factor will be very different between Veneers and Crowns...The general rule is that the Crowns will be about twice as expensive. Good luck and I wish you well.
Reply:ok, u dont need 16 veneers. u can mix and match. for ur front teeth- the part u see when u smile, get those veneers. the rest in the sides and back, get crowns. veneers r way more expensive then crowns. and no one is gonna see ur side/ back teeth. crowns r usually covered by ins. veneers arent. just get veneers on the visible teeth. the rest would just b a waste. cap them off.
Reply:crowns because i've heard that veneers cause side-effects like having 3 front teeth!!!
Reply:In appearance no difference, in cost a big difference. Myself I prefer the veneers as they can be replaced cheaper than crowns.
