I would like to get my teeth whitened but is laser or guard better?I also have 2 veneers & need them replaced?

I have been qouted £450 at local dentist for guard whitening and replacement of veneers included £2,100. I have receeding gums which I am worried about with the whitening process.

I would like to get my teeth whitened but is laser or guard better?I also have 2 veneers %26amp; need them replaced?
I agree with the Dental Nurse above...have your teeth whitened before you have your veneers redone so you get a perfect shade match.

The laser whitening is so fast and intense it could cause long term damage to the nerves.....it's a relatively new procedure so there is no long term literature to show how it may affect teeth in the long run.

The guard and gel method has been around longer so there is more literature around to back up it's safety.

The guard and gel method which you would use at home has a lower % of bleach and therefore is more gentle on the nerves. However some people do experience sensitivity through it's use.

If you're gonna go for it, I recommend using a bleach that is a 10% solution - the lowest available but you will find it just as affective....you'll notice a difference in a week or two.

Your receding gums shouldn't be a problem unless they are already sensitive in which case stay away from bleaching....it will exasperate the problem.

Private dental practises set their own charges for veneers or crowns - shop around to see if you can get a better price.

The current NHS price for one veneer is £83 but can only be done if clinically necessary under their guidelines....may be worth investigating - though trying to get an NHS dentist can be tricky depending on where you live.
Reply:i am considering having my teeth whitened also. i would say laser is the best way to go
Reply:why not try crest whiten strips much cheaper and they really work about $50
Reply:Your gums will get really sensitive with the guard whitening if they are receeding, and laser whitening makes teeth extremely sensitive even without recession. I whitened mine up four shades and had no problem and love my teeth now. Do you go to a private dentist? Thats really expensive for two veneers. But best to bleach your teeth before you change your veneers for best colour match, dont want to look daft after spending so much money.

Reply:Commercial tooth whiteners use hydrogen peroxide and

are expensive and inconvenient. A cheap and natural

tooth whitening home remedy uses few strawberries

but certain precautions have to be taken.

I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/ep7yg
Reply:Crest strips are good only for people with absolutly flat and perfectly lined up teeth. In-office procedure is faster and better. I don't know how they do it in England but in USA we give patients flouride treatments before whitening to minimize sensativity.

Earlier when there was no proper treatment introduced in dentistry only dentures was the answer for tooth decay. But now dentistry has advanced so rapidly that almost every tooth problem has a solution.

Prosthodontics deals with the replacement of teeth by fixing crows, bridges and dentures. A new technique has been introduced named as cosmetic dentistry that aims to add a glow to the teeth by making it shinier and whiter. It is obvious that when your teeth look beautiful it directly reflects in your smile and enhances your personality.

There are different procedures to beautify your teeth.

Bleaching is one of the procedures to whiten the layers of your

teeth by using bleaching agents. There are trays that are loaded with these agents and they are fixed to the teeth. They are removed after an hour or two. The process is repeated depending upon the patient’s tooth discoloration. There is a new procedure wherein the agent is directly applied to the teeth without using any trays. It can be completed in just a sitting within 30-45 minutes.

There is another technique, which can be carried out at home. Individual trays are made and are loaded with the necessary chemicals. They are inserted into the mouth and are retained for about 6-8 hours and are removed later. It requires almost 15-20 days to show results. But after this procedure you may experience slight gum irritation and teeth sensitivity. But the results of this procedure are really promising. It is better if the same procedure is carried out in the dentist’s office as the dentist has the required knowledge.
Reply:I WAS TOLD BY MY DENTIST THAT ' TEETH WHITENING' ONLY WORKS ON ' NATURAL TEETH' THAT IS YOUR OWN TEETH, IT WILL NOT WHITEN CROWNS OR FILLINGS, SO DONT BE TALKED INTO SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY, WHEN YOU WONT GET A GOOD RESULT.

DENISTRY IS MUCH CHEAPER IN CYPRUS, GO FOR A HOLIDAY AND GET YOUR TEETH FIXED AT THE SAME TIME.
